Magic Starter..

Beginning 2

In my subculture , during a festival or gatherings , people are served multi-course meal ; each time the first course is something bitter made of either Indian Lilac or bitter gourd ; and through starters , main course ,extended main course there is a long wait for desserts.

When I was 8 years old I questioned my mom , “Why can’t we begin with sweets? That tastes the best .Why do we have to wait so long for my favorite thing ? “

“That’s the magic . The best thing always comes at the end. Only if you try hard and finish eating everything , you can reach the end to taste the sweetness . ” she continued, ” It’s similar in our life. There is a magic waiting for you at the end. A sweet magic . You just have to be patient and keep walking. “

I nodded like I understood everything and waited for dad.

That evening ,I told him about the displeasure of eating bitter , salty ,spicy , oily , green-y , flesh-y ,curried versions of food to reach desserts and also mentioned what mom explained about magic.

“Why can’t we see magic in the beginning ? Why do we always wait so long ? “

“There is no magic. It’s all about Science. I’ll get you a book that explains all. ” he said , ” But  for now , let’s do one thing. Let’s save a portion of the dessert for the next meal so that our next start is always sweet .”

“Wow! Why didn’t I think of this?” I noted .

“It’s okay. Why am I here? To help you to think .”

He danced with me and we planned not to share this trick with anyone .

Slowly our secret became our truth ; we started our meal with a spoon of dessert and went on to taste the bitter thing as per traditions. Within some time , we got followers and fans and my dad named his invented tradition : ” Magic starter” .

Last week , during our holiday travel ,I was waiting for my husband outside of a country home. The place was surrounded by long green pines and filled with chirpy songs of birds. There was no human being within miles or as far as I could see. There, I saw this board hidden behind a tree.

At the end of 2013 , along with the baggage of a long year , I was trying to plan many new things for 2014 . This message seemed quaintly placed, as if someone wrote it only for me and forgot in the forest. It reminded me of the taste of desserts during our traditional meal , it reminded me of all the good and bad memories 2013 made . It made my memories tedious and dreams more pensive.  It reminded me of the magic of life my mom kept telling me.

Suddenly , I remembered something important – a picture. I took a picture of it. You know why? Because , I wanted to save the message and use it as a “Magic starterfor 2014.

This is how I am going to begin my new year!

[My dad is a Science geek and a lover of General Knowledge , quiz programs. He has answer to almost everything . My mom is a magic- chasing butterfly ; she believes that everything happens for a reason and magic to her is all about a happy ending. I love Science but still believe in magic.

Do you love dreams more than your memories? Do you begin your year with a message ? What kind of starters do you prefer to have ?

  1. I loved this, Archita – magic and science are both important, and once upon a time even the simplest science was considered magic – so really the two go together perfectly 😉

“Magic starter” that was just awesome!

    1. Hi C.K , I remembered you so many times in a few days.I visited your blog too! 🙂
      I hope you’re doing well.
Yes, I agree with you on magic and science.:)
I saw magic starter on Five star Friday this week. I could not believe that happened!

  2. I love, “Never Let Your Memories Be Greater Than Your Dreams.” I definitely get reflective this time of year. I think it is important to live in the moment while looking to the future.

    1. Thank you very much, D.S. 🙂 I loved your words : I think it is important to live in the moment while looking to the future. That’s what I think too. 🙂

  3. I don’t love dreams and I don’t love my memories either except a few. My dreams never come true…and my past life was a disaster !! So I guess neither of these things are for me 🙂 Loved the post though. Eating something sweet before starting the meal sounds fascinating ! Amazing read 🙂 Hope you are having good days ! Love xx

    1. Thank you very much. 🙂 You are very right : Living in the present is the key. 🙂 And yes , saving sweet as the starter of the next meal was quite thrilling and fascinating..:) Thank you for the visit.Hugs:)

  4. Wow! I like that quote. I’ve spent many years consumed by memories, they’ve shadowed much everything I do. I’m still trying to let them go. I really like this.

Also, your dad is a wise man. 🙂

    1. I am just like you. Sometimes days are blurred because they are fogged by memories. 🙂 I have worked on myself for a year now and I think 2014 is perfect for me for a fresh start.. 🙂

My dad is very wise ; he’s been my role model 🙂 Thank you so much for the visit and wonderful words. 🙂

    1. Yes, he is really lovable..:) I wanted to marry someone just like him..it took a while though to find a clone..:D In our Science & Maths loving family , only mom is an artist and she looks like a fresh flower in all of our boring discussions. 🙂 Thank you so much, Stacie, for your lovely comment and the visit. 🙂

  5. Looking back from retirement to earlier life, I had parents that were a little like your dad…do the fun stuff first then the bad isn’t so bad…and I taught my children that. Need more magic and sweetness. Enjoy your thoughts.

    1. Hi , That’s so true. It’s just like little play before going to study for exams , or in my case ,the way I watch TV before going to find solution for a difficult problem. 😀
Gives us more energy , right ? 🙂

I am so happy to know that you passed your knowledge to your children . We really need more magic and sweet moments. 🙂 Why to save good things only for the end of the year? 🙂

I am so glad after reading your comment. Made my day. 🙂 Thank you again 🙂

  6. Happy New Year !! Your post reminded me of Shukto that I quite loved as a child and I still love to have it once in a while. Cheers to your magic starter

    1. Hii Sangeeta , Happy New Year! 🙂 Thank you so much for the visit.

Now, I love shukto , “neem begun” and bitter gourd stir fry ; “Finally you grew up” – My mom says! 😀 I love all home food nowadays! 🙂 Our traditional Bengali meal is amazing. 🙂

I wish your new year starts with magic starter too – All’s well that STARTS well.. 🙂

  7. I’ve never eaten a meal multi-course style, but usually I finish eating one thing before the next thing. Always I save whatever is my favorite for last.

    1. Yes, Vanessa , that’s what I have been taught too. Saving the favorite for the last – I do that too , most of the times. Then there are times I remember Dad and our good times and I try to bring change in my perspective. 🙂

There’s no perfect formula to live a good life..:) Thank you so much for the visit and comment. 🙂

  8. Your thoughts and story telling abilities are both magically wise and thought provoking; perhaps an equal blending of your parents influence on your life as a child.

For me , some memories are bigger than my dreams. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. 🙂

    1. Absolutely trendsetting! Dad did so many different things like this. 🙂

We are made of memories – nothing is good or bad ; it’s just about the moment we are in and what suits us the best!
