I have been a runner since adolescence, not the physical kind though.
At first, I would just nonchalantly pace away from the usual challenges- too much homework, strict teacher, bullies, but then I discovered running. Everytime a problem arose, you would see me miles away, running without catching a breath, lest the weight of the problem weighed even callously on me.
And then the more existential kind, running away from a difficult conversation, a significant relationship, away from home and even from friends. My figurative runs were escapist at best, regrettable at worst.
But then I discovered the physical flight of fancy; one where you actually moved, not away from the problem, but around it and later through it, and see it transform your thinking.
I first ran around my problems at 28; then powered right through them at age 32 and I haven’t looked back ever since.
This run actually makes you happy, sweaty and heady. Also gets you in the groove to take any challenge head on.
This year, I would be running at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon ( 21 kms) and I have never been more excited.
So,I would say that running makes me the happiest.
