What would your life be like without music?

I tried to imagine, but failed miserably, oh wait, I wouldn’t know the term without the aid of music.

I come from a musically inclined household, where I had taken to learning Hindustani Classical Music at the tender age of 4 years. So, music became my first companion.

I used to stutter as a child, but I sang fluently. And that stuck with me and with the help of music, my dear friend, I successfully defeated the belligerent stutter.

My friendship with classical faded a little into the background to give way to Bollywood & Indie Pop as I grew out the first decade of my existence, I discovered English Pop & Rock in my teens ( what a wonderful worldview it helped me adopt).

I had some classics as my ‘falling in love’ playlist as I fell in love on the cusp of ‘sweet 16’, then sang my heart out to Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce in the aftermath of my first heartbreak.

The 20s were when I actually began experimenting with different types of music and found my way back to Hindustani ( Coke Studio, you saved my life), I also started connecting more with Bollywood music like reconnecting with a long lost lover. My 20s were a decade of transition with unimaginable pain, immense soul searching and doing whatever the heaven or hell I wanted. And I didn’t spend a single day without music.

My 30s are pretty much the same with the addition of more world music.

I can’t imagine a world devoid of music in my 40s and 50s ( I hope I never have to).

So, in short, music is an extension of me, and if it ceases to be, I would find myself drowning in a bottomless pit filled with mercury.
