I know the majority of answers are going to be about Literature without yet glancing through them.
I know because that’s one of my favorite questions to ask. And it makes me happier because it is mine too!
Every year during my school years, as my parents and I went to get our school textbooks, I was the most excited child at the shop and my parents were a little uncomfortable because for the next 2-3 days I would chain myself to the English and Hindi textbooks without much care for the outside world. I would only rest after finishing every story they carried.
I would leave all the non-fiction essays and such for the actual classes and read and re-read all the stories and then imagined the witty answers I would be able to present to the class. I would think of all the possible questions the teachers may have, and imagined the look of pride on my face as the answers rolled off my mouth with a natural ease.
Of course that only rarely happened and even when it did, my answers were not what the teachers were looking for. They wanted what they had taught and what would be relevant for the exams, not my wisecracks!
I remember in the 6th grade we had this quite an age-inappropriate ( and adulterous) story called ‘Admit Two’ or something similar, which was about a crime of passion and had caused quite an uproar in our class and the poor teacher had to teach it with a straight face much to our dismay!
So, why did I like Literature the most?
Because it gave wings to my flights of fancy
