Life was simple, my needs too. Back when the Neem (margosa) tree stood upright in the backyard of my ancestral home.
I loved to eat even then, but it was mostly mom made or granny made. Eating out was probably a weekly affair, that too something south indian.
Then I left home for college and left everything familiar. The hostel food was often unpalatable and weekly eating out turned daily. The fountain of youth let me eat eat anything and everything, roadside rolls, phuchkas ( or panipuris if you so prefer), biriyanis and the occasional samosa-chaats.
All was forgiven, partly due to the effort put in going out and discovering those outlets.
This continued for a good five years and then I moved to Delhi, and quickly discovered the horrors of Delhi belly. This meant roadside eateries had to be ignored ( quite painfully) and McDonald’s and Domino’s had to be befriended at a steep cost. Home or hostel delivery was still not common because of the minimum order cap.
And then came Foodpanda, the first food delivery app I tried and quickly became addicted to, you always had so many restaurants to choose from and mostly got good discounts too. Then came Swiggy and Zomato with better restaurants and better offers, and by now I was earning well and a great part of my salary went into ordering food.
I would break up with these apps from time to time, uninstall these apps, but somehow always patched up a few days later. Quickly installing and ordering a high value order as an ‘I am sorry’.
Then I married someone equally addicted to these apps and our questionable affair with food delivery apps continues.
