My guide to surviving emotional turbulence

Daily writing prompt
What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?

Catching feelings is fine; holding on to them is what activates the ageing demons around you and your hair starts to grey, your face turns into a grimace and your life turns into a blistering barnacle.

And Captain Haddock will tell you that it’s not a good look on you.

So, what I do are simply three things:

  1. Cry away my feelings: I am a big crier packed in a tiny body, so obviously I end up crying a lot. Crying is my first instinct when anger surges and I believe it helps rid me off the negative feelings.
  2. When my teardrops don’t find no guitar: I look to deep breathing. But to be truthful, this is a last resort thing for me. When I am unhappy or angry, any additional work only infuriates me further.
  3. Journaling helps when my anger or sadness is directing towards a person and not a situation. Therefore, I keep my journal tucked away in a very top secret place!!
  4. Working out is also something I resort to in an emergency because it is the toughest thing to do, but the moment you begin your workout or your run, you feel the dark clouds fleeting. When your heart is crying out loud for energy, your body forgets everything about your despair and shoots up all the O2 its way. That burning sensation is truly exhilarating and also a good mood magnet!

Of course, in the end, when all else fails, I rely on self-deprecating humor to navigate life’s lows with a smile and a laugh.
