All the cat ladies… all the cat ladies…

Women have been hated since time immemorial. No surprise there…

Women with cats? Well, let’s just say the hate is amplified by pesky men who can’t match the charm of our feline friends.

Their vitriol is frequently exposed on social platforms like X and Instagram. We don’t have TikTok in India, so I can’t speak to that (thankfully).

Recently, this view was echoed by the US Republican Party’s Vice President pick, J.D. Vance, who made a controversial statement about childless women with cats.

And, as expected, the internet—functioning smoothly thanks to the tireless sharing of cat photos and videos by millions of cat ladies—rose to the occasion.

As a cat lady myself, with low stakes in the US elections but a keen sense of solidarity with my fellow cat women, I wanted to show support. So, I decided to create a listicle of iconic movies featuring women protagonists with cats who rise up to save the day.

And here we go…

  • Alien: Ellen Ripley, the iconic cat lady, wisely navigates an alien-wrecked spaceship, making sure she and her feline companion, Jonesy, make it out alive.
  • A Street Cat Named Bob: Luke Treadaway plays a struggling musician whose life is turned around by a stray cat named Bob. We’re including a man because feminists don’t exclude men, contrary to popular belief.
  • Catwoman: Halle Berry stars as Patience Phillips, who transforms into the fierce Catwoman with the help of her mystical mentor cat, Ophelia.
  • A Quiet Place: Day One: The prequel to the suspenseful horror series features the lovely Lupita Nyong’o with her trusty cat Frodo who are courageously navigating the terrifying silence required to survive the ever listening aliens. ( Two alien movies where Cats help humanity survive you know)
  • Cat People: Irena Gallier, played by Nastassja Kinski, explores her mysterious connection to a wild feline heritage, blending suspense and supernatural intrigue. Though I haven’t watched this, the Wikipedia page tell me it is a horror-erotica with as much fun as gore, so I have to watch it now.

So, cat people assemble and share your favorite movies with cats and their women standing up to injustice and crime. I am all ears!
