Often—I use it often. I like how it conceals the ‘t’ within it, just like the word itself conceals its true meaning. You never quite know what someone means by often.
Does it mean every time or every year? Every day or every moment?
It’s a word that reveals as much as it hides.
There’s a phrase, ‘as often as not’, which perfectly captures the duality of often.
