My first computer…

Daily writing prompt
Write about your first computer.

Your first computer is like your first kiss. You remember it, but you also squirm at the memory.

My first laptop was a hand-me-down from my big sister. It was a Dell, but it had an Apple sticker pasted over the humble Dell logo.

I was so naïve that I had actually (pretty unabashedly) argued with a classmate about it being a legitimate offspring of a Dell and Apple partnership.

He was so annoyed by my silly proclamations that he offered to peel off the sticker for me.

It felt like an attack on everything I knew to be true, so of course, I protested and went back to my hostel with a flushed face and angry eyes.

There in the privacy of my dorm, I called my sis who proceeded to laugh at me for a while before telling me about the sticker’s magic. I remember avoiding the classmate for a few days after.

But as laptops go, it was a dutiful first laptop.

It forgave my transgressions countless times. Even when I downloaded viruses in my quest for movie torrents. It also taught me that “CD burning” does not actually require fire.

It bore witness to my silly crush on Mr. Obama. It was there for the birth of my first Blogger site-my gateway to blogging.

It was also there when I discovered my passion for copyrighting (though it is no secret that I went on to fail miserably at it).

It stood by me through my first breakup, enduring all the heartbreaking exchanges before and after it.

Now that I think about it, I never got to say goodbye. I didn’t lose it, that’s for sure. It must have just died of old age.

And now, strangely, I feel terrible about a metal box made of circuits!
